The VISION has been born that could change the Isi'bubulungu Coast into a world class tourist
destination. As shown above the concept is to create an extensive inland waterway from the canal at the
airport all the way back to the Bluff National Golf Course including “Pick’n’Pay Shopping Centre
Island” which could transform our shopping centre into one of the most unique  shopping centres in SA.
Some of the reasons why we believe this could be a viable scheme are:-
- Durban Harbour is the busiest port in Africa! With the demands of Shipping & Port Authorities
exhausting all available space it is likely that the port will have to be extended to Edwin Swales Drive in
order to cope .It is therefore, in our opinion, unlikely that Durban will ever have parts of the Bay of
Natal as for extended periods of time for the development of sustainable recreational waterfront /
leisure type developments.
- Durban, as a Tourism City, needs some calm recreational water and exciting waterfront developments!
- For Durban to be placed securely on the World Tourism Map, a bold and radical step is required.
- The current Engen site is a constant thorn in the side for everyone and is just “in the wrong place” –
the refinery is out dated and needs to be rebuilt to new world standards as a zero emission plant. We
therefore believe a new site should be found for the refinery!
- At the same time as the waterway is excavated, minerals such as titanium and coal could be extracted
by highly experienced operators like Richards Bay Minerals
…… these are just some of the reasons.

The opportunity that beacons is the reinstatement of a major inland waterway that has been reclaimed
over many years, back to the “original plan”. The “Cinderella Suburb” is the only one that will fit the
“glass slipper”.
The Isi'bubulungu Coast holds an incredible development opportunity for Durban to extend its coastline
and to create approximately 20 kilometers of recreational waterfront that will give Durban its
opportunity to become a major player in World Tourism and an opportunity to create an outstanding
venue for hosting a major world event like the Olympic Games, whilst creating hundreds of thousands
of employment opportunities for our people.

Perhaps the most exciting development opportunity Durban will ever have to create some of the most
desirable real estate in South Africa.
ISIBUBULUNGU AND BLUFF
The traditional Zulu name for the Bluff is Isibubulungu. Broken up isi is a prefix to many words in the Zulu language and basically means "I am". For example I am a spoon
etc. bubu means a green hairy caterpillar and lungu means white man. We believe the origin of the word developed from what the bluff looks like if viewed across the bay - it
looks like a long green hairy caterpillar! The second is ‘the white man’s Bluff’ - a reference to the fact that it became the first refuge for the sojourn of white shipwreck
survivors on the East Coast of Africa. Once shipwrecked their only hope of reaching civilisation ever again was to walk to Cape Town! Some of them did while others took
refuge at Isi'bubu and built sailing boats which they then sailed to Cape Town down the tretcherous "Wild Coast"  The word ‘Bluff’ means a ‘headland or cliff with
perpendicular face’.
